Access the Inaccessible in Antarctica’s White Desert

The white desert that is Antarctica is considered to be one of the most inaccessible places on Earth. Only a fortunate few – scientists and explorers in the main – have experienced this magical place, but we can help you unearth ground-breaking and incredibly exciting polar experiences on a yacht charter in Antarctica.

What kind of experiences are there to enjoy on a yacht in Antarctica?

Working with members of IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Travel Operators), YACHTZOO is able to create and deliver unrivalled polar yacht expeditions in Antarctica with world-class guides and expedition leaders.

Using RIB tenders, the crew will land you on remote shores and isolated ridges to explore with your guests and guides. Explore historic sites and abandoned wrecks left behind and preserved by the cold. Climb the ridges of Antarctica’s White Desert and enjoy the fjord-like areas, next to glaciers tumbling into the waters. Kayak around wrecks of old whaling vessels and learn about the history of the region through the eyes of those who ventured here in the past.

When you think of Antarctica, a plunge into the coldest waters on the planet may not be exactly what you had in mind! And stripping down to your swimwear might not seem like the most sensible thing to do. But, the very brave can take a dip in the geothermic shallows of a secluded cove. Warm robes are only steps away once you are back onboard and your crew will be standing by with hot drinks.

What will you see when visiting Antarctica by Yacht?

Of 17 penguin species worldwide, seven are found in Antarctica, four of these live and nest on and around the Antarctic continent and a further three live, and nest, on Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands. During your time on a yacht in Antarctica, you will have the opportunity to visit various colonies, including Gentoo, Emperor, Adelie and Chinstrap Penguins. Due to the changeable nature of the area, nothing is ever guaranteed but the route will be planned to give every opportunity to see as many as possible. We will arrange for naturalists to escort you ashore and instruct you on how to observe them in a responsible manner. Take part in Citizen Science projects that will give you the chance to follow ‘your’ penguin as it moves around the area.

Afterward, use your yacht’s sea kayaks to explore the inlets along the cruise route under the guidance of your personal instructor. You are likely to encounter Leopard and Elephant Seals as well as Sea Lions. You will be well-grounded in the safety and etiquette for approaching seals by your expedition leaders and can rest assured that all wildlife encounters will be responsible and non-invasive, in accordance with IAATO guidelines.

Schedule permitting, you will be able to visit one of the numerous scientific research stations in the area. Take the chance to learn more about the age of exploration and science that is still alive and well here on the Southern Continent.

When to visit Antarctica by Yacht?

The season for cruising in the Antarctic Peninsular is short, from December through to February.

Where to visit on a trip to Antarctica?

Due to the constantly changing weather and terrain on the Southern Continent, all plans are, by their nature, subject to change. That being said, a visit to Antarctica by yacht can start in King George Island by private plane from Punta Arenas or Ushuiaa – for those who have crossing the infamous Drake Passage on their bucket list!

What are the major yachting ports in Antarctica?

King George Island is the main pick-up point for vessels cruising in Antarctica, but is by no means a yachting port! Most vessels stick to Punta Arenas and Ushuaia.
